Macedonia

Before going to Mt. Athos I had to stop at Thessaloniki (as in St. Paul's letters to the Thessalonians) to get the papers ready to go. After a long and winding search for the pilgrims office (stupid Lonely Planet) and another winding search for the bus station to Chaldiki (Lonely Planet again) I went to Oranapolis to wait for the ferry to Mt. Athos.

The Church of Agia Sophia (Holy Wisdom), a smaller copy of the one in Constantinople.
An icon shrine.  These are all over every city in Greece.  I had never seen one until I came here.  Before going to Mt. Athos I stopped in a shrine to the Holy Mother to light a candle and pray for a safe trip.  I also prayed about my knee which had been hurting for weeks.  I was worried about it because I planned to do a lot of walking.  The next day it was completely healed, I had no pain at all.  It had been a constant pain for weeks, but it took me a while to notice it was gone.  I was in a museum and was walking carefully when I realized it didn't hurt any more, even when I twisted it or ran (luckily the museum was almost empty).  After all the walking I did, even in Spain it never hurt again.
A very small church in central Thessaloniki.  I couldn't find the name of it, but it was a beautiful little temple.
  The dome inside the church.
Me looking out at the ocean from my room in Oranapolis.  This was one of the nicest rooms I ever stayed in and it was only about 25 Euros.
Sunset over the Holy Mountain Sea taken from the port of Oranapolis.
Taken from the ferry on my way to Mt. Athos.  This is the small village of Oranapolis with an old fort.

Go on to Athens and Patras
