Tiger Leaping Gorge
A Two Day Trip and Another Near Death Experience

Finally, after days of looking at stuff I felt like I could finally do something.  The Tiger Leaping Gorge trail is a series of paths used by people from a string of mountain villages.  It passes above the Yangtzi River across from the forth gorge.  There are two ways to go, the safe way along a newly build road, and the fun way in the mountains.  There are four guesthouses along the way.  One at the halfway point, one further on, and two at a place called Walnut Grove.

All along the trail there were new houses going up.  People often rebuild or expand their homes when it's time for the son to get married.  The rate of new homes built in the US is a sign of how well the country is doing economicly.  Though China's west lags far behind the east, in these villages it looked like the situation was improving rapidly.  It could be that the government has encouraged this for the sake of foreign opinion, but more likely the standard of living is just improving.
This part of Yunnan was very dry area.  Even though it was the middle of winter everywhere else, it was hot here.  These cacti grew all along the trail.
Peasent life is more comfortable when you have satalite TV.  Several homes have these.
A man plows a patch of flat land in the mountains.
Terraced farm land.  I think they were growing rice.  If I'm not wrong this is from the village at the half way poing.
In some places the trail wraped right around the cliff face.  In places on the seconds, dangerous path I took there wasn't even a real road, just a narrow ledge with a metal cable fastened to the mountain to hold on to.
